The term “magnitude” is used in astronomy to measure the brightness of a star or other celestial body. The brighter the object, the lower the number assigned as a magnitude. In ancient times, stars were ranked in six magnitude classes, the first magnitude class containing the brightest stars.

Today mariners still use the stars to navigate by and there are 57 stars defined in the nautical almanac (a publication describing the locations of celestial bodies for mariners to determine the position of their ship). The term “magnitude” will be familiar to mariners and the Magnitude brand will be associated with the brightest stars in the industry.
